Hmm today’s post is not really about photography, but just a little bit of my thoughts that i hope every couple could spare some
thoughts to think about, espcially while you plan your budgets for your wedding day.

I have many times placed myself in the position where i ask myself on what is important to me if i were to get married and had to plan my
wedding day. Very often the questions that goes through my mind on what to prioritise first would be as follows:

1. Photography (Actual day)
2. Who will i invite?
3. Where will i have my wedding held?
4. What kind of theme/setting will i have?
5. Gown/suit (basically apparels)
6. How will i be able to make my wedding the most memorable day of my life? or at least one of it.

I’ve probably missed out on alot of other things esp the little details like what colour the gown must be or what flowers will i have…etc. And it is by no means due to the fact that i am a photographer that i had placed photography right on top. However, from the maybe hundred weddings i’ve been to and shot, i’ve came to realise that the average breakdown cost of every wedding would be approximately 60-70 thousand dollars.

1: Gown + Pre wedding photo package – $4000
2: Dinner banquet+decor – $55,000
3: Rings – $2000
4: misc ang baos and such – $2000
5: Shoes – $500

These Figures are just estimated budgets for the wedding. However do take note that i have left out the cost of hiring a photographer or a videographer
in the short list. But the average asian wedding budget is probably as such. So where does the budget for the photographer or videographer come from?
More often then not the money comes from after deducting the overall cost of all the items needed for the wedding which is probably somewhere between
$3000-$5000 dollars. But then being the typical Singaporeans we are, we’d like to save on as much as we can on the photography cos on the day itself
the photography is probably not as important as the gown that marks the bride as the “main item”, the “Princess” of the day.

But then, what comes after the night of the banquet, when everything is over? What comes after that 24 hours of your big day?

The cake is gone, the gown is gone, the banquet venue is being re furnished for another person’s big day or even a business conference. What do you
have left to remember your wedding by? To remember where you put $50,000 into? Or even what reactions your guest had when you walked down the
aisle in your $5000 gown laced with swarovski crystals? besides your rings, you have NOTHING, except for photos and perhaps videos of the day.

So as a consumer myself. I would like to ask all of you now, “What is important to you?” (Money aside). Is it the glamour you gain from that 2 minutes you
walk down the aisle in your gowns? or the 30 years of memory you have from the photos of you walking down the aisle. What is more precious to you and
perhaps even to your childrens or childrens’ children?

As for me, my answer would be my photographs of my wedding day. What is yours?

Have a pleasant weekend!

Sincerely,
Chris Lim
